away from the critical performance path that we do not attempt to provide fancy / fine-grained locking at all. There is one global lock that protects most attribute actions. Since attribute actions are non-blocking in nature, this will not cause deadlock. - Fix a problem where attributes could get deleted from a communicator before the communicator was actually released.
