c6070fd2e0 fortran/use-mpi-f08: fix [p]ompi_FOO_f symbols handling
- do not generate bindings for pompi_FOO_f symbols
   (they are simply not used anywhere)

 - move ompi_FOO_f bindings out of mpi_f08.mod into
   ompi_mpifh_bindings.mod that is only used at build time

f9ae932bfd Fortran: Enable using LOGICAL parameter in MPI extensions.
If a subroutine of the Fortran `use-mpi-f08` binding in an MPI extension
have a `LOGICAL` parameter and no `TYPE(MPI_Status)` parameter,
it needs to use the `mpi_ext` module and call its corresponding subroutine
in the `mpif-h` directory, as explained in
`ompi/mpi/fortran/use-mpi-f08/mpi-f-interfaces-bind.h`.
However, as shown in the figure below, the required directories are dependent
on each other, and "Can't open module file" error occurs at build time.

             ompi/mpiext/{extension name}/use-mpi-f08
                A                               |
                |                               |
                |                               V
   ompi/mpi/fortran/use-mpi-f08  <---  ompi/mpi/fortran/mpiext (mpi_ext.mod)

In order to solve this problem, change the configuration and the build order.
- divide Fortran extension directory (`ompi/mpi/fortran/mpiext`)
  into the directories for `use-mpi` and for `use-mpi-08`
    - `ompi/mpi/fortran/mpiext-use-mpi`     : for `use-mpi` (mpi_ext.mod)
    - `ompi/mpi/fortran/mpiext-use-mpi-f08` : for `use-mpi-08` (mpi_f08_ext.mod)

- change to the following build order about Fortran `use-mpi` and
  `use-mpi-f08` bindings in `ompi`
    1. mpi_ext bindings of MPI extensions (`mpiext/{extension name}/use-mpi` directory)
    2. Fortran use-mpi (`mpi/fortran/use-mpi-[ignore-]tkr` directory)
    3. Fortran extension for use-mpi (`mpi/fortran/mpiext-use-mpi` directory)
    4. Fortran use-mpi-f08 modules only (`mpi/fortran/use-mpi-f08/mod` directory)
    5. mpi_f08_ext bindings of MPI extensions (`mpiext/{extension name}/use-mpi-f08` directory)
    6. Fortran use-mpi-f08 (`mpi/fortran/use-mpi-f08` directory)
    7. Fortran extension for use-mpi-f08 (`mpi/fortran/mpiext-use-mpi-f08` directory)

b68d66bb9b MCA: Add the project/project version to the MCA base component
This commit adds support for project_framework_component_* parameter
matching. This is the first step in allowing the same framework name
in multiple projects. This change also bumps the MCA component version
to 2.1.0.

All master frameworks have been updated to use the new component
versioning macro. An mca.h has been added to each project to add a
project specific versioning macro of the form
PROJECT_MCA_VERSION_2_1_0.

c22e1ae33b configury: new OPAL_SET_LIB_PREFIX/ORTE_SET_LIB_PREFIX macros
These two macros set the prefix for the OPAL and ORTE libraries,
respectively. Specifically, the OPAL library will be named
libPREFIXopen-pal.la and the ORTE library will be named
libPREFIXopen-rte.la.

These macros must be called, even if the prefix argument is empty.

The intent is that Open MPI will call these macros with an empty
prefix, but other projects (such as ORCM) will call these macros with
a non-empty prefix. For example, ORCM libraries can be named
liborcm-open-pal.la and liborcm-open-rte.la.

This scheme is necessary to allow running Open MPI applications under
systems that use their own versions of ORTE and OPAL. For example,
when running MPI applications under ORTE, if the ORTE and OPAL
libraries between OMPI and ORCM are not identical (which, because they
are released at different times, are likely to be different), we need
to ensure that the OMPI applications link against their ORTE and OPAL
libraries, but the ORCM executables link against their ORTE and OPAL
libraries.

a8e2d6c3a6 The bulk of the remaining renaming changes, in one final glorious "blob". Thanks to Jeff for some help chasing down a few spots. Per chat with Jeff, we decided to cleanup a few things that were historical in nature:
top_ompi_srcdir  ->  OMPI_TOP_SRCDIR
top_ompi_builddir -> OMPI_TOP_BUILDDIR

We also split the srcdir/builddir flags according to their local tree (e.g., OPAL_TOP_SRCDIR), and tied them all together in configure.ac. Renamed ompi_ignore and ompi_unignore to be opal_<foo> as these are agnostic markers.

Only thing left is ompilibdir being treated similar to what we dif for srcdir/builddir. Coming soon.

f779b1ded9 Put back the static-library-detection stuff from r27668, with some
additional functionality.  Rationale (refs trac:3422):

 * Normal MPI applications only ever use the MPI API. Hence, -lmpi is
   sufficient (they'll never directly call ORTE or OPAL
   functions). This is arguably the most common case.
 * That being said, we do have some test programs (e.g., those in
   orte/test/mpi) that call MPI functions but also call ORTE/OPAL
   functions. I've also written the occasional MPI test program that
   calls opal_output, for example (there even might be a few tests in
   the IBM test suite that directly call ORTE/OPAL functions).
   * Even though this is not a common case, these applications should
     also compile/link with mpicc.
   * So we should add a --openmpi:linkall option that will also link
     in whatever is necessary to call ORTE/OPAL functions
   * Yes, we could hard-code "-lopen-rte -lopen-pal" in Makefiles, but
     we do reserve the right to change those library names and/or add
     others someday, so it's better to abstract out the names and let
     the wrapper supply whatever is necessary.
 * ORTE programs, however, are different. They almost always call OPAL
   functions (e.g., if they want to send a message, they must use the
   OPAL DSS). As such, it seems like the ORTE programs should always
   link in OPAL.

Therefore:

 * Add undocumented --openmpi:linkall flag to the wrapper compilers.
   See the comment in opal_wrapper.c for an explanation of what it
   does. This flag is only intended for Open MPI developers -- not
   end users. That's why it's undocumented.
 * Update orte/test/mpi/Makefile.am to add --openmpi:linkall
 * Make ortecc/ortec++'s wrapper data text files always explicitly
   link in libopen-pal

97cc916007 Per discussion at the Open MPI developer meeting last week:
1. Restore libopen-pal.la, libopen-rte.la, and libmpi.la to be
    separate entities (i.e., don't have libopen-rte.la include
    libopen-pal.la, and don't have libmpi.la include libopen-pal.la).
    Yay!
 1. Consequently, make the wrapper compilers look for flags indicating
    that the user wants to compile statically (currently: -static,
    !--static, -Bstatic, and "-Wl," in front of all of those). If it
    is, follow a 6-way matrix for determinining which libraries to
    list on the underlying command line.
 1. To support that, add the name of a token static and dynamic
    library to look for in each of the wrapper compiler data files.
 1. Fix a long-standing typo in the opalcc wrapper data file.

253444c6d0 == Highlights ==
1. New mpifort wrapper compiler: you can utilize mpif.h, use mpi, and use mpi_f08 through this one wrapper compiler
 1. mpif77 and mpif90 still exist, but are sym links to mpifort and may be removed in a future release
 1. The mpi module has been re-implemented and is significantly "mo' bettah"
 1. The mpi_f08 module offers many, many improvements over mpif.h and the mpi module

This stuff is coming from a VERY long-lived mercurial branch (3 years!); it'll almost certainly take a few SVN commits and a bunch of testing before I get it correctly committed to the SVN trunk.

== More details ==

Craig Rasmussen and I have been working with the MPI-3 Fortran WG and Fortran J3 committees for a long, long time to make a prototype MPI-3 Fortran bindings implementation. We think we're at a stable enough state to bring this stuff back to the trunk, with the goal of including it in OMPI v1.7.

Special thanks go out to everyone who has been incredibly patient and helpful to us in this journey:

 * Rolf Rabenseifner/HLRS (mastermind/genius behind the entire MPI-3 Fortran effort)
 * The Fortran J3 committee
 * Tobias Burnus/gfortran
 * Tony !Goetz/Absoft
 * Terry !Donte/Oracle
 * ...and probably others whom I'm forgetting :-(

There's still opportunities for optimization in the mpi_f08 implementation, but by and large, it is as far along as it can be until Fortran compilers start implementing the new F08 dimension(..) syntax.

Note that gfortran is currently unsupported for the mpi_f08 module and the new mpi module. gfortran users will a) fall back to the same mpi module implementation that is in OMPI v1.5.x, and b) not get the new mpi_f08 module. The gfortran maintainers are actively working hard to add the necessary features to support both the new mpi_f08 module and the new mpi module implementations. This will take some time.

As mentioned above, ompi/mpi/f77 and ompi/mpi/f90 no longer exist. All the fortran bindings implementations have been collated under ompi/mpi/fortran; each implementation has its own subdirectory:

{{{
ompi/mpi/fortran/
  base/               - glue code
  mpif-h/             - what used to be ompi/mpi/f77
  use-mpi-tkr/        - what used to be ompi/mpi/f90
  use-mpi-ignore-tkr/ - new mpi module implementation
  use-mpi-f08/        - new mpi_f08 module implementation
}}}

There's also a prototype 6-function-MPI implementation under use-mpi-f08-desc that emulates the new F08 dimension(..) syntax that isn't fully available in Fortran compilers yet. We did that to prove it to ourselves that it could be done once the compilers fully support it. This directory/implementation will likely eventually replace the use-mpi-f08 version.

Other things that were done:

 * ompi_info grew a few new output fields to describe what level of Fortran support is included
 * Existing Fortran examples in examples/ were renamed; new mpi_f08 examples were added
 * The old Fortran MPI libraries were renamed:
   * libmpi_f77 -> libmpi_mpifh
   * libmpi_f90 -> libmpi_usempi
 * The configury for Fortran was consolidated and significantly slimmed down. Note that the F77 env variable is now IGNORED for configure; you should only use FC. Example:
{{{
shell$ ./configure CC=icc CXX=icpc FC=ifort ...
}}}

All of this work was done in a Mercurial branch off the SVN trunk, and hosted at Bitbucket. This branch has got to be one of OMPI's longest-running branches. Its first commit was Tue Apr 07 23:01:46 2009 -0400 -- it's over 3 years old! :-) We think we've pulled in all relevant changes from the OMPI trunk (e.g., Fortran implementations of the new MPI-3 MPROBE stuff for mpif.h, use mpi, and use mpi_f08, and the recent Fujitsu Fortran patches).

I anticipate some instability when we bring this stuff into the trunk, simply because it touches a LOT of code in the MPI layer in the OMPI code base. We'll try our best to make it as pain-free as possible, but please bear with us when it is committed.

6ae9790d19 * Add option of init/fini hooks for MPI extensions to be called at the end of
MPI_INIT and start of MPI_FINALIZE.
* Clean up MPI Extensions build system to acknowledge that OMPI's the only
  project with extensions, as well as remove some build artifacts necessary
  for more general components.

d9b6b5af0c This commit converts us to the "one big libmpi" scheme that has been
discussed extensively.  See
https://svn.open-mpi.org/trac/ompi/ticket/2092 and the RFC thread
http://www.open-mpi.org/community/lists/devel/2010/02/7447.php.

Specifically:

 * Create LT convenience libraries for OPAL and ORTE if the layer
   above them is being created (use the already-defined
   AM_CONDITIONALs to know if the project above us is being built).
 * ORTE slurps in the LT convenience library for OPAL; OMPI slurps in
   the LT convenience library for ORTE.
 * Wrapper compilers now only -l one library (e.g., ortecc only does
   -lopen-ret, and mpicc only does -lmpi).

c7376ae053 Start using Libtool's shared library versioning scheme. See lengthy
note in VERSION file.

NOTE: the versions will ''always'' be 0:0:0 on the SVN trunk and
developer branches. They will only have meaningful values (starting
with 0:0:0 in 1.3.4) on release branches. Only RM's will modify these
values immediately preceeding a release.

3e847c19f0 Per RFC: MPI Interface Extensions Infrastructure
Add infrastructure for MPI Interface Extensions. This allows a developer to create new MPI interfaces that are non-standard.

The following email thread describes the functionality proposed in the RFC:
  http://www.open-mpi.org/community/lists/devel/2009/05/5997.php

The following wiki page describes how to use and enable the extensions:
  https://svn.open-mpi.org/trac/ompi/wiki/MPIExtensions

797ec531aa Some more work on the man pages:
* Make the creation of the build dir for the man pages a bit more
   robust (thanks to suggestions from Ralf W.).
 * Only distribute the .Xin files, not the .X man pages themselves.
 * Make the .X files depend on opal_config.h so that if you re-run
   configure and change opal_config.h (e.g., a new version), the man
   pages should get rebuilt.
 * Man pages are now cleaned with "distclean", not "maintainer-clean".
 * Fix a typo in opal_crs.7in.
 * Udpate make_dist_tarball to update "date" in the VERSION file.
 * Make make_dist_tarball a bit friendlier to hg checkouts.
