a47d69202f Add a monitoring PML. This PML track all data exchanges by the processes
counting or not the collective traffic as a separate entity. The need
for such a PML is simply because the PMPI interface doesn't allow us to

d44eb8a024 configury: fix autogen.pl --no-ompi
The Makefile.ompi-rules trim options previously used AM_CONDITIONALs
that were defined only when the OMPI project was configured. Hence,
if you ran "autogen.pl --no-ompi", autogen would fail with lots of
messages about undefined AM_CONDITIONALs.

This commit makes new AM_CONDITIONALs outside of the project
configuration that can be safely used elsewhere.

Per Paul Hargrove's email

38589c46c0 opal: add a destructor/fini function to opal
This commit is related to an RFC from June 2014. Disscussion can be
found at:

http://www.open-mpi.org/community/lists/devel/2014/07/15140.php

The finalize function is set using either the linker option -fini or
__attribute__((destructor)) depending on compiler support. I have
confirmed that this hybrid approach works with all the major
compilers. The attribute is supported by gcc, clang, llvm, xlc, and
icc. The fini function will support pgi. If a compiler/linker
combination does not support either the destructor or fini function a
message will be printed on re-init indicating it is not supported (an
improvement over the current behavior-- SEGV).

I moved the following to the destructor function:

 - Class system finalize. This solves a bug when MPI_T_finalize is
called before MPI_Init. The only downside to this change is we will
leave the footprint of the opal class system after
MPI_Finalize. This footprint should be relatively small.

This is an alternative to #517 but the two PRs are not
mutually-exclusive (with some modifications). This commit should also
be safe for 1.8.x as it does not change internal or external ABI (#517
changes internal ABI).

1029dea72b configure.ac: don't call AC_C_INLINE or AC_C_RESTRICT
OMPI *requires* a C99 compiler, so we don't need the AC_C_INLINE or
AC_C_RESTRICT tests anymore (because the C99 compiler guarantees to
support them). Indeed, in some cases (see open-mpi/ompi#491),
AC_C_INLINE gets the wrong answer and defines `inline` to be empty,
which screws up some systems (e.g., OS X with clang).

As an added bonus, we get to get rid of a bunch of gcc 2.96-specific
code (!) in configure.ac.

894acb0aa8 configury: new OPAL_SET_MCA_PREFIX/ORTE_SET_MCA_CMD_LINE_ID macros
These two macros set the MCA prefix and MCA cmd line id,
respectively. Specifically, MCA parameters will be named
PREFIX<foo> in the environment, and the cmd line will use
   -ID foo bar.

These macros must be called during configure.ac and a value
supplied. In the case of Open MPI, the values given are
   PREFIX=OMPI_MCA_ and ID=mca.

Other projects (such as ORCM) will call these macros with
their own unique values. For example, ORCM uses PREFIX=ORCM_MCA_
   and ID=omca

This scheme is necessary to allow running Open MPI applications under
systems that use their own versions of ORTE and OPAL. For example,
when running OMPI applications under ORCM, we need the MCA params passed
to the ORCM daemons to be separated from those recognized by the OMPI application.

c22e1ae33b configury: new OPAL_SET_LIB_PREFIX/ORTE_SET_LIB_PREFIX macros
These two macros set the prefix for the OPAL and ORTE libraries,
respectively. Specifically, the OPAL library will be named
libPREFIXopen-pal.la and the ORTE library will be named
libPREFIXopen-rte.la.

These macros must be called, even if the prefix argument is empty.

The intent is that Open MPI will call these macros with an empty
prefix, but other projects (such as ORCM) will call these macros with
a non-empty prefix. For example, ORCM libraries can be named
liborcm-open-pal.la and liborcm-open-rte.la.

This scheme is necessary to allow running Open MPI applications under
systems that use their own versions of ORTE and OPAL. For example,
when running MPI applications under ORTE, if the ORTE and OPAL
libraries between OMPI and ORCM are not identical (which, because they
are released at different times, are likely to be different), we need
to ensure that the OMPI applications link against their ORTE and OPAL
libraries, but the ORCM executables link against their ORTE and OPAL
libraries.

* cache the results of checking for macro weak symbols (for parity
with the weak symbol check -- although we should really
revisit/audit the whole cache-checking scheme throughout all m4

* add some more [] m4 quoting, even in the original C weak symbols test

eefa17026d windows: effectively revert r32449
The _strdup usage in opal/util/basename looks like it was a product of
Windows compatibility (see r11336), which we don't care about any
more. Further, opal/win32/win_compat.h, which we sitll maintain for
cygwin compatibility, #define's strdup to _strdup (which is what
Microsoft wants you to use).

So this old _strdup in opal/util/basename.c (and its corresponding
check in configure.ac) should just be removed.

c6d9bf906e configury: ensure wrapper static LIBS is filled properly
In core library portions of the configury (e.g., top-level
configure.ac itself), we were calling AC_CHECK_LIB and
OPAL_CHECK_FUNC_LIB to check for various libraries.

'''SIDENOTE:''' It turns out that modern Autoconf has AC_SEARCH_LIBS,
which does just about exactly what OPAL_CHECK_FUNC_LIB does. So this
commit effectively replaces OPAL_CHECK_FUNC_LIB with AC_SEARCH_LIBS.

However, we never bothered to add these found libraries to the wrapper
compiler list of libraries used for static linking (doh!). We've been
getting lucky for quite a while that components were adding the same
libraries to their wrapper compiler LIBS list.

This is problematic, however, if we don't build some of these
components. For example, Paul Hargrove noticed that if he configured
with --disable-shared --enable-static --disable-io-romio, ROMIO was no
longer adding some libraries to the wrapper LIBS list -- libraries
that just happened to also be needed by core OPAL/ORTE/OMPI layers.

The solution is not to use AC_CHECK_LIB or OPAL_CHECK_FUNC_LIB, but
use a pair of new macros:

 * OPAL_SEARCH_LIBS_CORE: a wrapper around AC_SEARCH_LIBS.  If we add
something to $LIBS, then also add it to the wrapper list of static
libraries. This is the main piece of functionality that was
   wrong/missing.
 * OPAL_SEARCH_LIBS_COMPONENT: similar to OPAL_SEARCH_LIBS_CORE, but
instead of directly adding it to the wrapper list of static
libaries, add it to <framework>_<component>_LIBS (which eventually
gets slurped up into the wrapper list of static libraries. See the
lengthy comment in config/opal_setup_wrappers.m4 near the beginning
of OPAL_SETUP_WRAPPER_INIT() for a more detailed explanation).
Most components did this correctly already, but one or two weren't
right, so I implemented this second macro quite similar to the
first and put it everywhere we already used AC_SEARCH_LIBS or
   OPAL_CHECK_FUNC_LIB.

This needs to soak for a day or two on the trunk before moving to the
v1.8 branch.

17d618abd2 As per the thread on ticket #4399, OSHMEM does not support non-Linux platforms. So provide a check for Linux and error out if --enable-oshmem is given on a non-supported platform. If no OSHMEM option is given (enable or disable), then don't attempt to build OSHMEM unless we are on a Linux platform. Default to building if we are on Linux for now, pending the outcome of the Debian situation.

3da579139b More corrections w.r.t. process groups
To accompany r31092 and r310924, also ensure to create a new process
group in the child right after the orted forks. Add trivial configury
to ensure that we have setpgid, and only do the setpgid/getpgid if we
have setpgid.

Without this commit, killing the entire process group can do
unexpected things (e.g., kill the orted, mpirun, and even mpirun's
parent!).

NOTE: I transferred the oshmem-disabled-by-default from the 1.7 branch to the trunk to minimize future disruption if/when we change that option.

bda840df49 Fixes trac:4205: ensure sizeof(MPI_Count) <= sizeof(size_t)
- Move the ptrdiff_t tests up higher in configure.ac to be with the
  rest of the type tests.
- Create new OMPI_FIND_MPI_AINT_COUNT_OFFSET for finding the
  corresponding types of MPI_Aint, MPI_Count, and MPI_Offset.
Consolidate all the old C and Fortran tests into this new macro (and
  .m4 file).
- Fix Fortran MPI_*_KIND tests that incorrectly keyed off assumed
types (e.g., int64_t) rather than whatever the corresponding C
MPI_Aint, MPI_Count, MPI_Offset types turned out to be.
- Add new logic to ensure that sizeof(MPI_Count) <= sizeof(size_t),
because our entire PML, BTL, and convertor infrastructure requires
this. As a side effect, just like MPI_Offset the same type of
MPI_Count (because MPI_Count has to be able to hold an MPI_Offset,
so we can't let MPI_Offset be larger than a MPI_Count).

31093f777b Remove an optimization to not bother setting up the C++ compiler if we
weren't building the MPI C++ bindings because this causes "CXX=no" to
be passed to the mpicxx wrapper compiler.

Unfortunately, this optimization was brought to the v1.7 branch, and
therefore if you --disable-mpi-cxx on the v1.7 branch, the same
problem will happen. So this needs to be CMR'ed to v1.7 as well.

c67c8e8187 Make the use of statfs()/statvfs() be more robust.
As noted by Paul Hargrove, the #if's surrounding the use of statfs()
and statvfs() in opal/util/path.c have apparently gotten stale (e.g.,
modern flavors of *BSD OSs no longer define __BSD). Changes:

 * Add statfs and statvfs to the AC_CHECK_FUNCS in configure.ac
 * Add a sanity check to ensure that we have at least one of statfs()
or statvfs(). Add a similar sanity check in opal/util/path.c, just
   as defensive programming.
 * Use AC_CHECK_MEMBERS in configure.ac to check for specific struct
statfs/struct statvfs members that we use in opal/util/path.c
 * In path.c, add some #includes as listed on the OS man page for
   statfs(2) (OS X 10.8.5/Mountain Lion)
 * The previous code used statvfs() on Solaris and statfs() everywhere
else. Attempting to replicate this with behavior-based configure
testing led to fairly complicted if/else logic, so the new code
uses whichever of the two are available (i.e., it might actually
use both -- OS X 10.8.5 and RHEL 6.5 have both statfs() and
statvfs()). The rationale here is that we don't really care which
of the two functions report the answer; we'll take the answer
regardless of where it comes from. For example, if one function
returns a failure and the other does not, we'll use the results
from the successful function and ignore the failed one.

This new code seems to work on OS X and Linux. We'll have to see what
happens with MTT and future Paul Hargrove testing...

6ef938de3f * Per the Developer's meeting today, restructure the threading in Open MPI a bit
more:
  - Remove OPAL_ENABLE_MULTI_THREADS, since it didn't really do anything
correctly. Opal always has threads enabled at this point.
  - Remove OMPI_ENABLE_PROGRESS_THREADS, since this hasn't worked in
8 years and it has performance issues we'll never be able to
overcome. Note that we have plans for re-adding async progress, using
a hybrid protocol of async and sync sends.
  - OMPI_ENABLE_THREAD_MULTIPLE now determines whether the thread lock
macros do the check or not.
  - Condition variables are ALWAYS polling right now, which fixes the thread
live-lock currently found when THREAD_MULTIPLE is turned on.
