Merge in the mca_base_select changes per RFC: http://www.open-mpi.org/community/lists/devel/2008/04/3779.php {{{ svn merge -r 18276:18380 https://svn.open-mpi.org/svn/ompi/tmp-public/jjh-mca-play . }}} Any components not in the trunk, but in one of the effected frameworks *must* be updated. Contact the list, look at the RFC, or look at the diff for how to do this. WARNING: Work on the temp branch being merged here encountered problems with bugs in subversion. Considerable effort has gone into validating the branch. However, not all conditions can be checked, so users are cautioned that it may be advisable to not update from the trunk for a few days to allow MTT to identify platform-specific issues. This merges the branch containing the revamped build system based around converting autogen from a bash script to a Perl program. Jeff has provided emails explaining the features contained in the change. Please note that configure requirements on components HAVE CHANGED. - massive change for module<-->component name fixes throughout the code base. - many (most) mca type names have "component" or "module" in them, as relevant, just to further distinguish the difference between component data/actions and module data/actions. Order of resolution is now (effectively): - read from MPI keyval (if associated) - read from command line - read from environment - read from file More capabilities will be added shortly for developers to programatically set MCA parameter values - Create [empty but commented] system-wide MCA param file that gets installed at $sysconf/openmpi-mca-params.conf (i.e., $prefix/etc/openmpi-mca-params.conf) - The following files are opened and read (in order): 1. $sysconf/openmpi-mca-params.conf 2. $HOME/.openmpi/mca-params.conf Specifically, the values in 2) will override the values in 1) (so users can override system-wide defaults. - Update MCA string params to allow for "~/" in the middle to be expanded to the user's home directory. - Added to default value of MCA parameter component_path to be: $pkglibdir:$HOME/.openmpi/components $pkglibdir is typically $prefix/lib/openmpi. So now both of these directories will be searched for components at run time (in all Open MPI executables, including ompi_info). First cut of the Show Help Subsystem (SHS) - see src/util/show_help.h for details (doxygen); main function call is ompi_show_help() - text message files are expected to be located in $pkgdatadir (usually $prefix/share/openmpi). Anyone can install a text file in $pkgdatadir with their message(s) in it and then have them displayed via ompi_show_help(). "pkgdata_DATA" is the keyword to use in Makefile.am's, for example (from src/mca/base/Makefile.am): pkgdata_DATA = help-mca-base.txt - added a few examples in the code base using ompi_show_help(), but not too many -- can convert more "show_help" comments in the code over time; no huge rush. :-) - no i18n-like support yet; waiting for advice and consensus from other developers This commit was SVN r2519.

MCA: Per-RFC, add support for performance variables This commit adds an API for registering and querying performance variables (mca_base_pvar) in the MCA base. The existing MCA variable system API has been updated to reflect the new API: MCA variable groups have performance variables, and new types have been added (double, unsigned long long) to reflect what is required by the MPI_T interface. Additionally, the MCA variable group code has been split into its own set of files: mca_base_var_group.[ch]. Details of the new API can be found in doxygen comments in the header: mca_base_pvar.h. Other changes to the variable system: - Use an opal_hash_table to speed up variable/group lookup. - Clean up code associated with MCA variable types. - Registered performance variables are printed by ompi_info -a. Introduce the MCA framework system. This formalizes the interface frameworks must provide. Other changes: - Added a flag to the MCA variable system to indicate a variable should go away when its group does. Both mca_base_framework_var_register() and mca_base_component_var_register() set this flag. Notes: - mca_base_components_open is deprecated. It will be removed in a future commit. - All frameworks should use MCA_BASE_FRAMEWORK_DECLARE to declare their framework structure. - All calls to framework open/close functions should be changed to use the mca_base_framework_* functions. - Instead of special-casing installdirs a flag was added to prevent calling into the variable system when opening a framework. - Ralph: Clarify the functional definition of the "register" function in the MCA framework object - it had the same name as another function that does a totally different thing. - As per discussion with Ralph the behavior of mca_base_framework_register() is to always call mca_base_framework_components_register() if the framework's register function was successful. MCA: Per-RFC, add support for performance variables This commit adds an API for registering and querying performance variables (mca_base_pvar) in the MCA base. The existing MCA variable system API has been updated to reflect the new API: MCA variable groups have performance variables, and new types have been added (double, unsigned long long) to reflect what is required by the MPI_T interface. Additionally, the MCA variable group code has been split into its own set of files: mca_base_var_group.[ch]. Details of the new API can be found in doxygen comments in the header: mca_base_pvar.h. Other changes to the variable system: - Use an opal_hash_table to speed up variable/group lookup. - Clean up code associated with MCA variable types. - Registered performance variables are printed by ompi_info -a. It is up to the caller to free the original value if necessary. The new value will be freed by the mca_base_var system and must not be freed by the user. - Variables with constant scope may not be settable. - Variable groups (and all associated variables) are deregistered when the component is closed or the component repository item is freed. This prevents a segmentation fault from accessing a variable after its component is unloaded. - After some discussion we decided we should remove the automatic registration of component priority variables. Introduce the MCA framework system. This formalizes the interface frameworks must provide. Other changes: - Added a flag to the MCA variable system to indicate a variable should go away when its group does. Both mca_base_framework_var_register() and mca_base_component_var_register() set this flag. Notes: - mca_base_components_open is deprecated. It will be removed in a future commit. - All frameworks should use MCA_BASE_FRAMEWORK_DECLARE to declare their framework structure. - All calls to framework open/close functions should be changed to use the mca_base_framework_* functions. - Instead of special-casing installdirs a flag was added to prevent calling into the variable system when opening a framework. - Ralph: Clarify the functional definition of the "register" function in the MCA framework object - it had the same name as another function that does a totally different thing. - As per discussion with Ralph the behavior of mca_base_framework_register() is to always call mca_base_framework_components_register() if the framework's register function was successful. Fix mistake that came in via the ompi-agen tree in r23764. The mistake wasn't part of the core autogen upgrade; it was an additional 'bonus' cleanup. Oops. The mistake will always create a set of directories under installdir, even if you do not --with-devel-headers. The set of directories will be empty, but still -- they should not be there at all. This commit fixes that -- the directories are not created at all if you do not --with-devel-headers This commit was SVN r23801. WARNING: Work on the temp branch being merged here encountered problems with bugs in subversion. Considerable effort has gone into validating the branch. However, not all conditions can be checked, so users are cautioned that it may be advisable to not update from the trunk for a few days to allow MTT to identify platform-specific issues. This merges the branch containing the revamped build system based around converting autogen from a bash script to a Perl program. Jeff has provided emails explaining the features contained in the change. Please note that configure requirements on components HAVE CHANGED.
